What institutional ownership tells you

It shows who has chosen a fund, how concentrated those holders are, and whether they’re adding or leaving. For a fund company, it also shows which advisers and institutions already use a fund or a competitor’s.

What it doesn’t tell you

13F data covers managers with $100 million or more in US securities, and only at quarter end. Retail money and smaller advisers aren’t in it, so institutional value is a part of a fund’s assets, and it can include assets held for clients.

To compare the portfolios of two funds, use the ETF overlap tool. To read about the filings behind this data, see 13F filings.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as an institutional holder?

Here, any manager that reports the fund on Form 13F. That includes advisers, banks, broker-dealers, insurers, pensions and hedge funds.

Why can reported value change when nobody traded?

13F value is the position's market value at quarter end, so price moves change it. Share changes show actual buying and selling, and each holder's change is shown in shares.

How often does this update?

Quarterly, as 13F filings come in. They're due 45 days after each quarter ends.
