Overlap by weight adds up the smaller weight of each holding the funds share, so 100% means identical portfolios. Long securities only: derivatives and cash vehicles are left out. Sources: VOO, SEC Form N-PORT, June 30, 2026; SPY, IVV's SEC Form N-PORT, June 30, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How is ETF overlap calculated?

For each holding two funds share, take the smaller of its two weights, then add those up. Two identical portfolios score 100%, and two funds with nothing in common score 0%.

Where do the holdings come from?

From the portfolio reports funds file with the SEC on Form N-PORT, which become public with a delay. SPY and MDY are unit trusts that file no holdings with the SEC, so they're shown using IVV and IJH, which track the same indexes. DIA has no comparable fund, so it has no holdings here. Each fund's date is shown beside the result.

Why does overlap look low for two funds tracking the same index?

Usually because their holdings are from different dates. Market moves and index changes between those dates reduce the number, and the tool warns you when dates are far apart.

What does which institutions own both mean?

It lists SEC Form 13F filers that report positions in all the funds you picked. That compares the funds' owners, not their portfolios.
